Selling Your Junk Car to a Scrap Metal Yard: A Step-by-Step Guide

by Brittany Rose

Scrap metal yards offer a great opportunity to get some cash for your old junk car. This is because the process of selling a junk car is both quick and easy when choosing to sell these unwanted vehicles to a scrapyard—such as TNT Auto Salvage. If you are interested in selling your junk car, taking a moment to review the step-by-step guide below can help you to accomplish this task with ease.

Step 1: Contacting Scrap Metal Yards For An Offer

The first thing you will want to do is to contact several different scrap metal yards to inquire about them buying your junk car. This will allow you to get some different offers and ensure that you are getting as much money as possible for your vehicle. When calling scrapyards to get an offer, be sure to have basic information regarding your vehicle on hand. The information that is typically requested includes the make, model, and model year of the vehicle. You will also be asked about any parts that have been removed from the vehicle and any aftermarket parts that have been added to the vehicle. All of this information is used to help the scrapyard determine exactly how much your vehicle is worth so that they can make an offer to buy it.

Step 2: Transferring Ownership Of Vehicle

Once an offer has been made and accepted for the purchase of your junk car, you will need to complete paperwork officially transferring ownership of the vehicle to the scrapyard. This step can be completed at the scrapyard if you are able to transport the vehicle on your own. However since most junk cars need to be towed, it is most common for this step to take place at your home once a tow truck has been sent to your location in order to collect the vehicle. The easiest way to complete this step is by signing over the title to the vehicle. If you no longer have the title, you will be asked to complete an affidavit swearing that you are the owner of the vehicle and that there are no active liens against the vehicle. You will also need to complete a bill of sale in order to transfer ownership.

Step 3: Receiving Your Cash Payment

Once all of your paperwork is in order, you will be given a cash payment in order to complete this transaction. This payment will typically be provided to you by the tow truck driver who is sent to collect your vehicle so that you do not need to make a separate trip to the scrapyard in order to collect your payment.
